AVOIDING "PHISHING" ATTACKS

Never ever EVER send in your information regarding Paypal, Ebay or any bank through an email that you have received... Online this is called "phishing" and some of you may not know this.

These people setup hosting accounts with bogus credit cards and information since many hosting companies automatically setup accounts through a program rather than verifying first. They get a web site and start sending out emails saying stuff like "verify your information" or "urgent - your account has been tampered with" blah blah blah. They travel web host to web host getting quite a few hours to setup their scam and start retrieving information from the unsuspecting.

IGNORE THEM ALL! Just delete them. If you really are worried that your accounts have been messed with, open a new browser window and visit your bank, ebay or paypal by yourself and login. Do NOT login through any link sent through an email. Never. Delete them - period.

As a web host, we've received 3 hosting account signups in the past week alone with people planning to "phish" the internet. We verify all accounts that we setup. So, hosting with us wouldn't work for a scammer. But they try! They'll try until they finally find a web host that does automatic account setups.

I just want to stress how important that it is to NEVER reply to any of the information requested through an email. A legit company will not ask you to do this.

UPDATE: A new trick is that they are now sending out Paypal looking emails that say "You have received a payment from XXX" - Login through THIS link to paypal and claim your monies." DO NOT DO THIS. If you think you have money coming to you, close that email and type into your browser www.paypal.com and login that way. NEVER login to any account by clicking through in an email.

She also holds a BA and MA in English Literature and Language from The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C. and the Diploma of Education from The University of the West Indies, Jamaica. She continues to study and observe the human voice through teaching and performing, participating in events such as the Richard Miller Summer Masterclasses held at Oberlin Conservatory, Ohio, and reading the findings of other vocal researchers and teachers.
